A
quilt dating from the 1930s is on display now through October at the Log Cabin
Museum of the Lincoln County Historical Society. Karen Oetjen acquired the Methodist
Fan, (also known as Baptist Fan) quilt at the Portland Expo
in 1992. The quilt features colorful fans made from strips of scrap materials
on a spiraling background. The all-cotton quilt is hand-stitched except for the
binding. This quilt is is a beautiful example of the fan pattern. We are
thrilled to be able to display quilts of this quality that have been brought to
this area, Loretta Harrison, executive director of the Lincoln County Historical
Society, said. Quilts for the display are provided by members of the Oregon
Coastal Quilters Guild which works with the Historical Society on the Quilt Heritage
Project. The projects goals are to register all quilts made in or brought
to Lincoln County and create a photo archives of quilts with the Historical Society. The
Oregon Coast History Center, which includes the Burrows House and Log Cabin museums,
is located at 545 SW Ninth Street in Newport. The museums are free and open to
the public Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Oregon Coast History
Center is administered by the Lincoln County Historical Society, a nonprofit organization
dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the history of Lincoln County.
